Gordon - I agree, it has been natural to use the milk from animals for drinking, cheese production, yoghurt etc. etc. for centuries and we are none the worse for it - more likely 'better' -
but what happens in modern milk production is that the standards in which animals are kept differ, also - and I am not sure about this - for a cow to continually produce milk, she has to calve once a year, similar with goats - which outcomes, if they are male, go to the butcher etc. etc.
it is cruel, the way we moderns use this natural cycle.
It would have been similar (and is) in more tribal societies, yes the offspring would also often have been 'meat', but would have had a good life - for a while - at least.
I don't get this Vegan stuff either - (but one of my girls went through a period of Veganism and I think is doing it again - can't invite her to anything I do for my friends) remember working with a 30-something year old who had been Vegan since her teenage years and she already had the dry skin of an old woman - but there are probably ways around this, if well-informed.
One thing is for sure - if we didn't have this integrated world in which one can get soy something or other from Asia, fruit out of season from all over the world - almonds galore (and whether growing so many almonds is a good idea remains to be seen) also imported - figs from Turkey - my Argan oil from morocco - etc. Veganism would not be an option.
Just IMO - could be wrong - will stand to be corrected.
