There’s another thing that’s got a lot cheaper. We threw everything at the mortgage, the only luxury we allowed ourselves on an infrequent basis was a cheap Tuesday pizza, for $20. Pizza Hut were the only ones around. Amazing what some competition does.
New (and second hand) cars are also far, far cheaper. A friend bought a Laser in 1988 for $19,000. I think it had a/c.
