Nelson Mandela had 6 children and was married during the period of his detention; the families of those in detention, including Nelson Mandela, were under constant threat and severe harassment. He was arrested for treason for his anti-apartheid activities. As a lawyer he acted often with little reward for the disadvantaged. When released he advocated reconciliation and forgiveness rather than retribution which probably spared a great deal of blood shed.
