I don't think it defeats the purpose of posting broker data, and you are absolutely right it can be at times irrelevant and manipulated. Broker data should be used as a guide only, another tool to evaluate whats going on in the market. The more information you have to make a more informed decision to buy/hold/sell the better.
On the other hand there are plenty of instances where broker data can be extremely valuable, it just depends on the stocks characteristics.
