Basically, when one buys or sells shares you have the trading day (the t) plus 3 days for the transaction to settle.
Some, especially those with leanient brokers, will purchase securities that they may believe are in for a short time rise with the hope and idea of exiting within that t+3 period for a profit with the actual outlay of no money.
