I assume Nuheara's signal processing is similar to conventional hearing aids. In speech mode, it will use speech detection and enhance the speech band frequencies. Speech is easily identified by the rate in peaks and troughs between the syllables in words. The DSP is able to turn down gain during the milliseconds that exists between the syllables. This in effect lifts the speech out of the noise. This is combined with an attenuation in frequencies that are outside the speech band range. The directional focus further attenuates all sounds that arrive from non-speech directions.
The problem with speech enhancement processing is that it generally poor for listening to music. Most devices therefore tend to have an optional music program, in which the speech enhancement features are disabled and a broader frequency response is applied. Advanced hearing aids will detect the situation and automatically switch between speech and music modes.
