''Well since we are not beings with infinite knowledge, the only thing we can cling to is the rationality and veracity of the central principles of the religion and the empirical progress made to the individual and the community when the said principles are put into action.''
There lies the problem, the central principles of religion in general vary between religions in particular. One religion believes such and such, which is rejected by other religions. Which in turn become a source of division and conflict as evidenced by a long and sad history of division and conflict.
As for ethics or morals, decent behaviour can be taught without religion, at home, in schools. It just takes the will to do it.
