There lies the problem, the central principles of religion in general vary between religions in particular. One religion believes such and such, which is rejected by other religions. Which in turn become a source of division and conflict as evidenced by a long and sad history of division and conflict.
As for ethics or morals, decent behaviour can be taught without religion, at home, in schools. It just takes the will to do it.
