It took 3 decades for lithium ion to be perfected. We will be long gone by the time another major breakthrough in battery technology comes through.
We have only gone up 10 times in energy density in 100+ years, battery technology is not like semiconductors, it is limited by thermodynamics and all the easy gains have been taken. You can also see lithium ion is mid life (~40 years) compared to other chemistries.
