Getting desperate now are you - changing the goal posts. Given that Yuan has a literal meaning of "people's currency" I don't think they would call it the dollar. Dollar is not a shortened version of anything - especially the dollar.

As my e-mail said - I work and worked with a lot of people of Chinese heritage both professionally and socially- and conversations were formal and informal - so all is covered.

One thing I was reticent to bring up as I was still coming to terms with whether it was a serious comment. When you said " Look at your keyboard, most keyboard ONLY have "$" sign but not "¥"". The short answer is that the keyboard would if it was in China. Not much reason to have it here when we don't have the Yuan as our national currency.

A longer answer is, you just select insert a symbol and then click on the Yuan symbol. Since the 1990's (when I first encountered it) there are also Chinese translation applications where the keyboard in Chinese can come on the screen. Later ones (I have no history of seeing them in action) can actually do a reasonable job with translating the English entered into Chinese.
