You are correct, Judaism follows matrilineal descent.

Apparently both Mary and Joseph were Jewish, so this dictates that Jesus would also be Jewish and being born in the "safe seat"(at that time) of Bethlehem in Judea would seem to confirm his Jewishness.

I do note however that some scholars are at odds this Bethlehem version and state that Jesus came from Nazareth.

It's all very confusing
