Not true. Alternatives to Li-ion batteries are not just lab benchtop, nor they need "more than 3 years."
There are six commercial car models in the market that use hydrogen fuel cells: Honda Clarity, Hyundai Nexo, Hyundai Tucson FCEV[2], Mercedes-Benz F-Cell, Riversimple Rasa, and Toyota Mirai.

Fuel cells are not the only ion batteries in the horizon: Na-ion cells are also a serious possibility.
