The issue isn't CTL, its UCG. Despite what people may think, the technology is UCG, the expertise, the difficulty and the potential is all UCG, not CTL. CTL has been around for decades - SASOL for example.
How exactly are we being misled? Show me some evidence so I can agree/disagree with you. On the claim that its "clean-coal" technology, I would defintely agree. In my opinion UCG is far cleaner (for reasons I mentioned in the other thread) than surface gasification.
But what are they going to do with the syngas? Power generation and syn-fuel production are the only two options. Having UCG and not CTL is like having a pizza without cheese. Sure you can do it, but it just doesn't taste as good! And clearly the CTL business is increasingly being seen as a profitable one, considering the increased attention right now on geopolitics, energy security, petrol prices, etc.
Linc went down this path 5 years ago, before anyone else, and are reaping the rewards of their foresight now. MEE and CXY may start off with power generation, but it won't be long before they get on CTL. They are waiting to see how Linc commercialises the process. Where there are sheep, there are wolves.
