Yes you have hit the nail on the head. Esports is dynamic, the landscape changes with game evolution. But for the pureists some titles don't change a great deal, yet still capture audiences in the millions.
In the world today, we have the opportunity to to associate with groups we identify with more readily. For example HC is a great place to talk to other stock enthusiasts. If im a feminist and want to connect with others I can find facebook and internet groups and so on, point is it's become much easier to invest more time in things you want to do, and associate with people you want to talk to and see. Gaming is another evolution of that access phenomenon. No longer are gamers isolated to basements by themselves, it's a social and celebrated activity.
I personally still think the gaming industry is still under-exposed and under-capitalised, it's popularity and social acceptance will grow. Peak hype in my view is a long way away, and I think the dynamics are such that it will be able to endure for a very long time.
I particularly like EM1's concept for that very reason, it's vision is to improve existing connection points and create new ones. For me the question is about the current economic viability of doing so, it's seems like a good idea maybe just a bit too early. Infrastructure is still very expensive and the technology is not advanced and reliable enough to deliver the experience I think consumers will want.
I'm still waiting to see the signs of that, maybe it's 6 months away, maybe it's a few years.
