Oh is that why Australia has such expensive diesel GZ. I thought it must be due to some kind of government charge but I did not know the history.
Government action to at least make diesel the same price as petrol should be a priority then. They will not like the loss of tax though as you point out, but reducing diesel prices would assist in reducing inflation since nearly all transport relies on diesel.
