OK I understand why you would choose not to answer the personal curiosity questions, they probably are too private. I dunno about "foolish" that's a bit harsh. I read back over my post and didn't see much "foolishness" there.

To progress with the comparison we originally discussed we are still stuck at the definitions discussed above.

I have read figures which showed the average of long term median percentage growths for Australia, Melbourne and Sydney. I don't have a reference for them at this moment but (from memory) the figures since Federation were as follows:

    1) Australian average percentage median growth = 11% pa
    2) Sydney average percentage median growth = 12.5% pa
    3) Melbourne average percentage median growth = 13.5% pa

I stress I don't have a reference for these figures atm, I only have my memory.

Is there a percentage growth for the All Ords since federation? I imagine it would have gone through several different indexes over that time so there would need to be some smoothing of the figures.

The thing I want to re-emphasise is the raw growth figures will need to be defined, what are we actually looking at? The other thing I will re-examine is the mechanics of investing in one asset class vs the other.

The amount that an individual can invest (given their income) has to be taken into account if you are to calculate the relative merits of each asset class.
