tilerman,
its called the long term cyclical nature of countries. China was the centre of the world for asia for about 1000 years. Then it got fat and lazy, and started believing that its emperor could repel enemies by just stamping his foot (no joke!!!)
Along came an energised britain and changed all that. the 19th century belonged to britain, the pound was the world currency.
Then world war 1 followed by ww2 came along and crushed britain, and a younge USA took over dominance. At first USA minded its own business, didnt try to dictate world affears, but as it became richer, its people become not really lazier, but too inward thinking and demanding of current satisfaction. Its government became the 'policeman' of the world.
Now a re-energised china has emerged and the cycle starts again.
