As you point out in the last paragraph it is indeed stronger forces that create the chart than the lines it forms, but it is in identifying these lines that allows one to identify the larger forces and profit from them.
Current market conditions imo could be in the process of a long term top thus possibly identifying the conditions you have mentioned.
Baby boomers moving cash around all at the same time would be a significant event. One thing I haven't seen any research on is the impact on the economy as baby boomers drain their super funds over the next 20 years as the travel and generally enjoy their later years.
