Somewhat off topic, but thalidomide has killed more people than any other drug in history. Not directly, but by causing a massive ratcheting up in the testing and red tape required to release a new drug. This has lead to the cost become so huge that whole disease areas are no longer economic to develop new drugs. The regulators have become so worried about approving another thalidomide that they make the hurdle for a new drug rediculously high by requiring an enormous amount of testing be done before release.
