its a long term investment can mean just that. It may take a while to get things drilled/start mining/start produing or whatever the company does.

Doesn't mean that their trade is underwater does it? Example. I have brought shares in XX company. It doubled in price, and I sold half. The rest I keep for the long term, yet am still ahead on my trade. I keep them as I feel that in the longer run, this company will do much better. In the short term, I want my money back to invest elsewhere.
