Our economy of scale doesn't lend itself to produce cheap consumer goods.
We are good at digging, pumping and building harbors.
We always imported many goods, only the source has changed, and it is better and cheaper than previous alternatives.
And why not buy from the nation that buys most of our resources? China and Japan and lately India.
Makes sense to me.
