why not? If you're being fair you're going to be defending him by implication, to a certain extent, surely? This is by logical extension of your next comment:

And because it's complex and couldn't be immediately unwound and he's not superhuman and he made some reasonable calls which as it turns out, didn't fully reflect all the circumstances not then evident (such as the very compromised situations of purchasers), we're supposed to hate the guy?...according to some in here only persistent hatred will do...

Instead of try to understand the circumstances he is in and why he made the calls that he did. And more importantly what are the current circumstances and what are the most likely outcomes. I think your analysis is spot on apart from this small issue of perceived defending.
