I'm not a lawyer, but S. 173 of the CA seems to be important. Being legislation, it means "legally" to me.
Also, try http://sraa.asn.au/company-registers.html for some detailed information on what you can and can't ask for, and there are restrictions on what you can use the information for. From my reading of the notes, you should seek some legal advice on what to ask for and how to ask for it.
