Someone may have mentioned this, but one reason for the value of australia's bauxite is the cheap and plentiful energy in the form of natural gas from the NW shelf that could be used to generate the power for a smelter. Gas is relatively clean, and with the proximity to bauxite reserves, the NW would be an ideal place for the Chinese (or anyone) to site an aluminum smelter.
