Physical face sealing is not effective to prevent water ingress. That is why, for example, facades in high rise buildings involve complicated “pressure equalised and drained” window systems even when the windows are not operable. It is just not right to say the facade can be physically sealed off with render and sealant. Water will inevitably get in, and more importantly water which does get in needs to be able to escape.
I am not saying it can’t be done with block walls because obviously it is done. But I do not think it is as simple as you are suggesting.
