In a nutshell there have been a lot of shares bought short which means that the people who bought these were banking on the price going down. It has done the opposite so people will close out their short at a loss. If a lot of people do this then this drives the prices up. This is called a short squeeze when people are just trying to exit. Maybe whoever these people who borrowed the shares from have received a margin call as well forcing them to sell. That is a very simple way of explaining it.
