Most western elections are won and lost by only a few percent. That means nearly half of voters voted against the winner. Just because someone swings victory by a few percent does not mean they have any great support. Look at the recent American presidential race. Hillary got 2 million more votes than Trump but the counting system gave Trump victory. Do you seriously think that means all Americans should accept Trump as leader ? And before the Hilary haters and Trump lovers all jump in I am using this as an example only. IMO unless a candidate gains at least two thirds of the vote they can not claim any sort of popular mandate.

By that reasoning Labor will never win any future election and any election it has won under our current system does not give it a mandate to introduce its warped ideologies.
