Just because the market goes up doesn't mean that investors generally make money.
You only have to read some comments on HotCopper to realise there are many poor investors out there.
Just do a Google search, "why do 90% of investors lose money on the sharemarket?".
People follow the trend in the wrong direction, they sell when shares are going up, and buy when they are going down.
