I found the article that watford was referring to, which goes into as much detail as saying LNC, CNX and CXY are all trying to enhance the first step of coal to liquids process by igniting coal underground. The context of the article is that a Shell exec wants to warn people that the whole coal to liquids technology is not yet proven to be commercially viable.

Apart from the UCG process, I think CXY is poorly placed in this article as only LNC and CNX are currently looking for liquids out of UCG; not that CXY cant focus on this in the future.
