As for what is happening right now, we know that the US will do anything..., whatever it takes to ensure its hegemony (dominance) over all comers. It cannot allow China to grow unchallenged for decades into the future. The US (like all powers) are driven by fear and cannot allow their destiny - at some future point - to be dictated to them by a State more powerful. The US is now acting to mitigate the economic expansion of China, and as it does, some level of discomfort will be felt - the Global Economy will continue to slow for the time being.

The response by Central Banks has been to provide stimulus, mainly in the form of lower interest rates - easy money. The manner in which our Reserve Bank and NZ’s counterpart dropped interest rates recently wreaks of desperation. The way the US Central Bank pivoted from raising rates to dropping is one of the scariest actions I’ve witnessed in all my yrs following the markets.

Now, cast your mind to the backend of 2018 and remember what happened to the markets when the US raised rates another quarter. It sent shivers through the World’s stock markets. Why? Because cheap money isn’t smart money. There are marginal projects everywhere, ready to topple at the slightest tightening in the money markets. Is an acceptable reset even possible at this late stage???

The response to all this comes through loud and clear. Governments, through their Central Banks will do anything to keep the system afloat. Interest rates cannot be allowed to rise. As interest rates near zero, or go negative, Government spending and bond buying and share buying will takeover. The can gets kicked down the road and all the while there is one commodity that, in all of history, seems perfectly positioned to benefit from that stimulus...

Excellent post Prisoner (a "telling" alias BTW!).

I saw on the news last night some US agency guy telling the NZ Govt NOT to take on Huawei's 5G technology and, if they do, then the US will not share information from the "five eyes" alliance. Never mind that NZ is one of the "five eyes" members.

No evidence that Huawei is spying - or even has the ability to. Huawei has offered to build a special laboratory in NZ for NZ techies to break down and inspect Huawei products (just like the UK has done for the past decade and they also have found no evidence of any spying!).

The US are starting to realise they have not only been overtaken - they are being left behind! I understand Huawei is now working on 6G.

The US days are numbered and, naturally, they don't like it!
