    Renison mine officially re-opened

    Release date: 28 Jul 2008

The Metals X 8,500 tpy capacity Renison mine in Tasmania was officially re-opened on Friday. According to the Hobart Mercury, the first tin concentrates to be produced in Tasmania in three years will be shipped from the local port of Burnie to Thailand and Malaysia next week.

“After three years on care and maintenance, commercial tin production is under way again,'” said Bluestone Mines Tasmania general manager Duncan Bennett. “The mine has had a precarious history over the last decade and has changed hands twice but that is now history - ancient history.” The mine employs 180 staff and a contract workforce of 60. A company workforce of 220 will be employed between the Renison and Mt Bischoff sites by the end of the year.

Apart from Metals X, several other companies - Stonehenge Metals, Kangaroo Metals and Van Dieman Mines - also plan to commence smaller scale tin production in Tasmania over the next few months.
