Houses are affordable for "ordinary citizens".
It's just that the average ordinary citizen seems to think they should be living in a mansion on the beach or in a 3 bedroom penthouse.
Drive 1 hour from any CBD in Australia and you will find something "affordable".
It is true that beachside and CBD locations are expensive but relatively speaking this has always been the case. It's just that what was out in the "sticks" 20 years ago is different to the same today.
Perhaps in 10-15 years time when the mining boom and international migration to OZ stops then house prices might come off a bit. Until then I suggest people either bite the bullet and buy (go out of the city a bit or buy something and rent it out for a few years), or be prepared for much higher rents. It is a choice.
