Canute did NOT try to stop the tide.
Ignorant people think that is what the story was, but that's because they haven't actually read the "facts".

Canute was besieged by supercilious sycophants, who were telling everybody about the Godlike powers of Canute.
He got sick of it, and, to prove a point, had them move his throne down to the low tide mark. He then commanded the tide to NOT come in, which it did anyway, of course, proving that he did not have Godlike powers. Those people lost face and left his Court.
