Some super funds eg. IOOF and CBUS allow you to invest in individual stocks in your super but only in stocks that are in the ASX 300 index. Previously my super was with IOOF and I invested in direct shares with this super - the problem though was that I could only invest in ASX 300 companies and I wanted to invest in a number of the smaller mining co's. In the end I opened a SMSF and rolled my super into that and I can now invest my super in any companies listed on the ASX. For me it's working better as I can now buy small stocks in my super that previously I could not access.
