From the Australian Transport & Energy Corridor Ltd (ATEC) website, the latest status report (April 2008) states - for the proposed Mt Isa to Tennant Creek rail sector, 1st stage of PFS with the Fed Govt showed that
- some new mines needed to open along the route to make the line viable
- the Adelaide/Darwin railway line needed to be upgraded to cope with heavy mineral loads
- this would be the last section of Australian inland rail (i.e. linking Melbourne and Darwin via NSW & Qld) to be completed as it requires significant govt investment
To give an idea of current timing (i.e. as at April 2008), the Border Railway (Moree/Toowoomba) project by ATEC is planned to be built by 2014.
