if I had knee OA (which I am very thankful not to yet), and there is an approved treatment that are injections, I would definitely not think to myself (but I can get some tablets to do that and treat myself DIY style). I would get the injections. nor would I expect the doctor to say "the trials were for the injectable form but the tablets are probably just as good".
I believe that the original comment was describing a work around that was required only due to the lack of such approved treatments..
