"Personally I consider the cobalt project dead now with the new battery technology coming through."
I disagree. Cobalt consumption in EVs is increasing, this is the reality. Eliminating cobalt from batteries, on the other hand, is all theoretical and not yet reality. Even if it became reality, do you think that all of a sudden every manufacturer would switch to non-cobalt batteries? If and when it "hits", there would be plenty of time for you to give up on cobalt if you wanted to.
I mean, even if you look at the future stuff, all the pie in the sky stuff, some of them actually use cobalt. Like this million-mile battery patent granted to Tesla:
Tesla million mile battery uses Cobalt
"The lithium-ion batteries described in the paper use lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide, or NMC, for the battery’s positive electrode (cathode) and artificial graphite for its negative electrode (anode)."
It is true, Musk did declare once a long time ago that he would "eliminate" cobalt from his EV batteries, but what has transpired since then contradicts what he said. This patent, plus that joint venture for a cobalt mine in Indonesia, all tells me that Tesla's current direction is to continue using cobalt in their batteries.
