Your comment on (lower) price is a little disingenuous, the specs for the 3 are lower than the S so they're just expanding the addressable market (not lower price for the same product). Fair point on gross margins.
There's always an inflexion point with disruptive businesses (particularly capital intensive ones) and the first mover doesn't always win so it's possible they may not make it as you suggest.
Amazon consumed a lot of capital and for a while there were sceptics that they would make it Uber is still not profitable and it may never be
I hope Tesla makes it because their product really is a class above. If they don't I wouldn't put it past old oil and old auto to try and get some level of control over the remnants, purely to kill it.
