I was there just this June and there were heaps of luxury cars. It also felt extremely safe as there are cameras on every street. If you aren't a troublemaker there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Seems to be more state capitalism to me.
While there are plus and minuses of state capitalism. You can't deny how orderly things are as sometimes the majority interest needs to be put ahead of the minority. Look at those extinction rebellion blocking the CBD and creating chaos. China (except HK) would have none of it.
