I also share your concerns. I was a shareholder of Big UN and luckily sold out after making 10 times my money before it went up in flames. So I am very skeptical of hockey-stick presentations.
I did a quick look on the Apple appstore and google play store. I believe I have found the same thing you have. Where are all the apps, right?
I believe we haven't found the number of apps and paying subscribers they are reporting because it costs money to list on the aforementioned stores. A lot of the apps on those stores are free because they generate revenue from ads. So there is an investment decision being made here.
I believe the paying subscribers' apps are being promoted on the SMB's social media sites or emailing lists. This makes it extremely difficult for us to "run the ruler" or verify their claims.
I am going to go through their zendesk when i have time and try some apps.
Also. Whether it is an app or not is immaterial to lay business owner (BO). If it provides value, the BO doesn't care what its called. If it was called something else, my guess is the BO wouldn't use it because they don't understand it. "App" is a misnomer but a very strategically chosen one IMO.
