Difficult to have vision when vision doesn't get the votes today and elections are won on 'today' topics and policies not long term visions. China anyone?
The short term greed of capitalism leads to wars and re birth. However given the choice we will always choose short term wealth over socialism/communism . The ones that don't are generally those incapable of the creation of said wealth. Not all but most.
If we had any real vision we would be a self sufficient country selling only our excesses.
Why don't we? We form alliances for physical protection based upon trade. That's ok however then greed said we should open our borders and trading to our potential enemies and now they control us. We have become dependent on China who will one day own this country unless war/s destroy it first.
That's a tad gloomy for Xmas isn't it but non the less a real risk.
