I also saw them and can pinpoint the time a bit more accurately. I was having a 2 storey house built in Perth and the builder went belly up after the concrete slab for the second level had been poured. That made a great platform for looking to the south and I couldn't believe what I was looking at because it was so spectacular compared to what I was expecting to see. It had to be about 1988. Luckily with indemnity insurance the house eventually got finished.
