These were all hugely influential people and I can only assume that their personalities were magnetic. Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, they took actions that have propagated through time leading to world-spanning religions.
I read a book by Javier Sierra called "The Secret Supper" which I cannot recommend strongly enough, it is beautiful.
There is much in the book but the most salient point for me was that if you want to commune with your God, whichever one, you can do so any time, anywhere and you don't need an intermediary.
You don't need churches, mosques, temples, and you don't need priests, rabbis, imams, whatever. This thought, expressed in previous times would lead to imprisonment on charges of heresy.
The reason is that such a thought negates the need for the middlemen and the middlemen don't like that. They have made a living, a very good living, by placing themselves between people and God.
I have no idea what God is, or if there is a God, and quite frankly neither does anyone else. I do know one thing and that is people who try to use the idea of God to gain control of other people, well they are one of the biggest problems this world has.
