    I agree that there is a large amount of fear-mongering in the world, including on HC, and stock-market crashes are a popular focus of that negativity. Some indulge in fear mongering for mendacious reasons to deflate share prices, and others because of that brand of stupidity explained by the Dunning-Kruger effect - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

    The main purpose of my post is to ask you to comment on time-based stock-market comparisons. Are not the many failures like BYL et alii removed from the index, and new stocks introduced to it, and hence we are not comparing like with like. Also, how are dividends factored into the comparison? On the issue of mendacity, are such comparisons valid?
