We have a Forest reserve behind our house and whenever anyone tries to get it cleared, the answer is that it's habitat for native animals (which it is), but controlled clearing would have been much nicer for the animals than what has happened lately.

A good friend of mine is a Fire fighter and he told me only yesterday that they are hoping for a change of rules to allow more controlled burns during winter because they have too much red tape at the moment to get things done properly.

My daughter lost her house and she was on a six acre block with minimal trees. Most of the houses that were burnt were hit by floating embers several kilometers from the fire front, so having trees up close was not the only issue. I saw some areas where the fire jumped two rows of houses and streets to burn a house that was 500 meters away from the main fire.
