Humm.. maybe it is your system more so then firefox..
you should have a look at what else is running.. i.e virus software and all the other addons that get put in your startup process..
That Crtl Alt del in to Processes is a handy tool to see what may be causing some of your firefox problems..

I just download chrome for a play.. will run it for a while and give feed back..
As for now.. love Firefox, as the add-ons are just too good to go past..
