I had intended to resist responding but darn it I discovered I had one of those pesky buttons on my back.

I might have though my earlier responses to you made it clear that I don’t have confidence that the royal commission will solve the problems of the sector. But it’s not intended to solve the problem. It’s intended to put a spotlight on the sector and highlight where failures exist and suggest ways of addressing these. No matter though real solutions will occur with political will and systemic change. The royal commission addresses many of these. Try listening to John pollaers sometime if you haven’t already. He has an interesting perspective and has commented in public on his frustration around political will. (Btw it’s a royal commission with commissioners not an enquiry board).

It is I note somewhat tautological to suggest that dementia is part of the problem given that dementia is for the most part associated with aging. So your commentary in that regard adds little to the debate.

Are you suggesting that you don’t like their thoughts on physical restraint - or the other favoured method - chemical restraint? Or have I misunderstood?

by the way there is a bit of research that suggests that violence or unwelcome behaviours in those with dementia may well have its genesis in unmet needs. Being misunderstood, not having a need met, being pushed around or controlled, social isolation, wrong medication and so on.

equally there is research that suggests social interaction is an important factor in healthy ageing. Many more progressive aged care providers actively encourage use of social media as a way of retaining important social links, and also as memory joggers. So it is quite possible that hot copper provides a useful sociaL outlet and has protective value. Hey there’s a marketing angle for hot copper.
