Transport sector is the one. Including ships e.g.. cargo, obviously need private support, steal ship builders from overseas etc..
I think one can say the trams are largely a waste of money, NBN as well. The new rail system in Sydney seems cheap for passengers, too cheap to be honest. Thats fine if it increases productivity but does it??
I know fast train is a little pie in the sky but I think it would make more sense than the NBN which is getting superseded already by 5g and then 6g etc...
The XPT between Melbourne and Sydney only has 5 carriages which is not near enough!!
Really it should be 20 carriages long at least and prices dropped.
Prices are too expense for rail because the states cannot manage it properly. Interstate train travel seems too expensive compared to inner city travel
Maybe interstate routes need too be taken over by the federal government. I have no issue with China building a fast train line between even Brisbane and Melbourne. Can't see a security risk from China building a train line!! A lot depends on battery technology to get economical VTOL aircraft up and running though. If the technology comes up a lot will be redundant except major transport for quick lines. If a train could go from Sydney to Yass in an hour and then to Albury Wodonga and enough an hour to Melbourne from there that would make a big difference. Canberra can be bi-passed because it has the airport and they can VTOL to Yass in minutes as long as a decentralised hub(s) has been enabled

Across the country small towns/villages are dying. Everything is getting online, retail disappearing. Even larger towns are starting to fail and with the immigrants they just become unemployed and problematic. For this to work infrastructure like fast trains must be enabled.
I met a guy that would work from Pyrmont, every weekend go to Wagga for about 24 hours then go back again, could not get work in Wagga but decided to do the weekend commute 14 hour round trip by train for at least 6 months. This clearly is madness and highlights dysfunction.
Lot from the country are FIFO or work elsewhere including defence so apart from farming and the out resource extraction facility no real income generation occurs due to lack of infrastructure including communications. The infrastructure needed to forge business opportunities especially in transport is simply absent highlighted by the queues from people trying to go from the bushfire area back to Sydney.

I suppose if enough people caught such trains and went to hubs and used other transport to and from the hubs the trains should not become redundant in theory if the hubs are in smart situations geographically
