They died because they were overcome by their own immune system which filled their lungs with fluid.
As a general comment, Kevie dear, we have to hope that whatever is happening in Hubei Provence can be brought under control and not spread to the rest of China - if it can there is an end in sight. If not, I can see no way of stopping it spreading to other countries.
