From what I've read, geology and mining do not appear to be the problem. The problems or in the processing plant, both technical and mechanical. I personally think PLS rushed the study phases and did not have a sufficiently thorough understanding of the metallurgy (variability). Furthermore, they rushed the engineering and also purchased a lot of Chinese equipment - this is evidenced by the significant amount of re-engineering/de-bottlenecking currently being undertaken. Of course this is coating them money they don't really have. It's always a great selling point to be 'first to market' but in this case it's bitten PLS in the bum. I sincerely hope they can recover to be a profitable enterprise.
