Banning short selling for a brief period will give govt bodies a better indication of what the true market liquidity is really like. Are retailers buying, are they selling, was it just bots/hedge funds creating false liquidity. It will also give them the opportunity to analyse and understand the impact of short selling on market prices and market liquidity. They will also be able to determine who the players/companies are in lending/borrowing stock.
I would be more worried if liquidity volume didn't substantially increase over the 3 weeks - that means the retailers simply have no money to buy stock and the short sellers have been VERY active in the markets.
For those that have the time and capacity, the next three weeks would be a great time to analyse volumes and price movements in as much detail as possible in those 799 companies and in the oz companies which are affected.
Cheers,
